Ummmm, enough with the Pay to Blog crap, ok? (UPDATED)

I mean, I totally get that it's a great way to make extra $$ and I love all of you, but I swear to ALLAH, that if I see THE SAME DAMN ADVERTISEMENT on multiple blogs again I AM GOING TO QUIT READING BLOGS WITH PAID POSTS.

ESPECIALLY when they aren't labeled as sponsored posts. If some posts are labeled and some aren't, it can be annoying.

For example: wRitErsbLock and Mandy, and sarahk and Kate.

/rant.

I wouldn't bitch, except this happened twice in 10 minutes. Sheesh.

UPDATE:
Pam has an interesting discussion here in the comments. I said this:

The honesty issue bugs me, too. That’s one of the things that gets to me. I mean, why is someone who I know to be a homebody suddenly dreaming about Vegas? Or a healthy person expounding on the virtues of lap band surgery? Which is why the NOT labeling posts gets to me, too. It seems dishonest. Especially when other posts are clearly labeled as sponsored posts.

What set me off the other day, though, was multiple posts on the same advertisers. It was just too weird.

I know some of you were upset and unhappy with what you felt was me pointing fingers, and I'm sorry if you were offended by what I said, originally, and I have edited myself. Clearly though, this is an issue that people care about.

PS: Any of you with paid posts should know better. I'll be back. I'm an addict, after all. Just frustrated.

Yeah, I'm actually to the point on some blogs of being constantly worried some cute story is going to end up being an ad. Like I need to be on guard... Blah. Gotta be a better way folks. :/

Can I get paid to comment? Please?

Posted by: zonker at August 24, 2007 07:02 PM

Zonk, buddy, as often as you comment, it would COST me $$ to send you a check.

Posted by: caltechgirl at August 24, 2007 07:22 PM

Sorry! sometimes the advertisers request that the post NOT be labeled an ad. I'd rather have a little disclosure on it too.

BTW, look at the bright side, me, the slacking blogger, is getting more posts in. ;-)

I don't do sponsored posts... then again I don't get enough traffic to make it worthwhile even if I wanted to - which I don't. *grin*

Don't get me started....

I'd be just AWFUL at the art of posting for dollars. I mean, my segues would be like, "So, buy this brand of adult diapers, OK? Or don't. I mean, just go ahead and pee yourselves. I guess I don't really care. Now back to my dog fart story."

I have never been sooo happy to see my name missing from a list. Yes, I do paid posts. Those little $5 to $10 things actually help pay for presents for the kids. But I try to make sure everyone knows up front so you can skip it if you want. Thanks for the heads up... I'll lay off for a month or two. Looks like it is annoying a large group. I thought I was not doing it too often... but... I completely understand the annoyance.

I have thought about posting for dollars..but not seriously. First of all it just don't pay enough to make it worth while..some of the real big dawgs that get a million hits a month probably can make enough to more than pay for their site rent but I figure that as long as blogger is free I don't need the extra bucks to pay for my bloggin'. And besides, once one starts taking money from these people they might just want to have some control over what I do..I mean look at congress..

You know, I signed up for PPP a few months ago, just to experiment. I did one post ($6) and haven't done any more. Most of the stuff they have for bloggers to plug is stuff I wouldn't right about, so I'm not doing it if it's that big of a stretch.

Now if people want to send me free crap to review, well that's a different matter altogether! Free stuff = AOK in my book. And people can easily skip those reviews with me. I do so few (OK, I've done one. ;-) And I have another one to do...).

I posted a very lengthy reply.

Teresa, you have a very good Alexa ranking since you're on munu, and you would probably be eligible for a lot of posts for which I'm not. I don't know if they've caught on and excluded munu (blogspot is excluded on most, because they can't get an accurate Alexa ranking), but I haven't seen it listed anywhere.

Posted by: sarahk at August 25, 2007 09:38 PM

LOL - Sarah, I've never looked at my Alexa rating - it's funny to think I'd rank so highly.

Still, on the pay for posting, I won't be doing it. I don't need the money so I'll leave it for people it can really help and make a difference. :-)

Dang. I just realized I vented my spleen -- er, my Venom -- on you without actually intending YOU to be the recipient. This entry did annoy me, primarily because I hate getting lumped in with other people. (I'm VK. I'm special. I'm a legend in my own mind. Just ask me!)

But now that I've taken my hostilities out on two of my blogs (and on my bathroom, dishes, garden and carpet), I do get where you're coming from.

Which is NOT to say that I enjoy being part of a lump. (And, also: I don't have that great of traffic.)

I adore you, CTG, and it pained me to think that you are so dissatisfied with my blogs that I'd lose you as a Venomite.

I'm sorry if I was harsh. I wanted to tell you that here in front of your readers (and I've said as much at my site so mine know it as well).

But as for specifically labeling posts as "sponsored" simply because I work in a paid link, I'm not going to do that. Why? For the precise reason you've indicated: you won't read them.

I believe a well-written post that happens to include a sponsored link should still be well-written regardless of the sponsored link. The honesty of the writing around the sponsored link is what I owe my readers. Nothing more and nothing less.

And that's what I'll agree to give, too.

I've completely stopped reading bloggers who've gone to ppp, because of many of the reasons you've listed. I figure, why even blog then, if all you're going to do is advertise. I guess to me, a blog is an extension of who I am, and writing up ads for someone wouldn't be worth the money I pay for the space.

But then again, I eschew meme's for the most part too. Not that my entries aren't anything other than crap, but it's MY crap, that I wrote. At least then if someone reads it, they weren't duped into thinking they had to buy some product. I'm pretty up front about the fact that my posts are nothing but liquid brain poo.

Paid posts? Seriously? I haven't run across it yet. At least, not that I know of...
